What are crowns and veneers?

Crowns and veneers are prosthetic replacements that we use for the purpose of aesthetic, functional and phonetic rehabilitation in the oral cavity.

When do we use veneers and when do we use crowns?

We use veneers to correct the shape, color or position of the teeth. Unlike crowns, veneers require minimal grinding (a layer of enamel must remain) or no grinding at all (so-called “non-prep” veneers). The veneers are glued to the front surface of the teeth, are very thin 0.3-0.6 mm and very faithfully imitate the appearance of natural teeth, so their popularity is not surprising. Natural teeth without fillings or with minimal fillings are an essential prerequisite for making veneers.
We also use crowns to correct the shape, color, and position of the teeth, with which we replace the lost aesthetic, functional or phonetic role of the teeth. Crowns require more extensive teeth grinding, they can replace teeth with fillings, teeth that have changed color due to nerve extraction or that have been damaged due to some traumatic process, which gives us a wider spectrum of action.

How to recognize if I am a candidate for veneers/crowns?

The first step is a clinical examination by a dentist with an X-ray (orthopantomogram). The patient is photographed and the initial situation is scanned, and the patient’s future smile is computer designed. Based on the above, the dentist assesses the situation and presents the future smile to the patient and advises on possible options.

What is the durability of crowns/flakes?

Crowns and veneers are made of ceramic materials that completely imitate the appearance of teeth (shape, color and size). Ceramic materials imply high durability, and with regular check-ups by the dentist and adequate oral hygiene of the patients, they can last for years.

How long does the process of making veneers/crowns take?

The manufacturing process, from grinding to placing the work in the patient’s mouth, takes from 24 hours to several working days.
Of course, there are cases where extensive rehabilitation is needed and they can last longer.
